Should you get acupuncture?

There are many misconceptions about acupuncture out there. This is your health - so don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions !

Acupuncture looks a bit like voodoo, so some people think it involves magic, and/or is a last resort thing to 'try'. This is very, very, far from the truth !

You don't need to 'believe' in acupuncture for it to work.  Science has shown that needles have a direct effect on your body when inserted, retained, and manipulated at specific points. There are short-term effects locally around the acupoints and along the meridians / connective tissue, but there are also more general, long-term effects on your whole body (immunity, hormones, stress) - like getting a massage, or going for a run. And let's not forget the huge pharmacopeia of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Many modern drugs are discovered and developed based on ancient knowledge of Chinese herbs (recent examples: Tamiflu, Artemisin).

In an official report, Acupuncture: Review and Analysis of Reports on Controlled Clinical Trials, the World Health Organization (WHO) has listed the following symptoms, diseases and conditions that have been shown through controlled trials to be treated effectively by acupuncture:

  • low back pain
  • neck pain
  • sciatica
  • tennis elbow
  • knee pain
  • periarthritis of the shoulder
  • sprains
  • facial pain (including craniomandibular disorders)
  • headache
  • dental pain
  • tempromandibular (TMJ) dysfunction
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • induction of labor
  • correction of malposition of fetus (breech presentation)
  • morning sickness
  • nausea and vomiting
  • postoperative pain
  • stroke
  • essential hypertension
  • primary hypotension
  • renal colic
  • leucopenia
  • adverse reactions to radiation or chemotherapy
  • allergic rhinitis, including hay fever
  • biliary colic
  • depression (including depressive neurosis and depression following stroke)
  • acute bacillary dysentery
  • primary dysmenorrhea
  • acute epigastralgia
  • peptic ulcer
  • acute and chronic gastritis

The WHO has a separate list of 68 more conditions for which acupuncture has shown definite therapeutic effects, but more proof is needed to establish acupuncture as a mainstream form of treatment, and 9 more for which acupuncture is worth trying due to reported therapeutic effects.

The ideal time to get acupuncture is when you start having little nagging issues, whether it's extra stress, your digestion, your sleep, your emotions, PMS. Acupuncture is a great tool to bring balance back into your life before the small issues we all tend to ignore become full-blown problems. Traditional Chinese Medicine is also a good choice for chronic pain, allergies and other mild chronic issues, as long as you're committed to a minimum treatment plan for recovery. Acupuncture can be a useful adjunct to boost your quality of life when undergoing severe medical treatments such as dialysis or chemotherapy. It can also help increase your odds of a successful pregnancy when doing IVF.
